If you are applying for a US Visa (B1/B2, Student, or Work), you likely know that the process is split into two days. The second day is the "big" interview, but the first day is arguably just as important: The Biometrics Appointment, also known as the OFC Appointment.
Many applicants get nervous about this step because they don't know what to expect. In this guide, Smile Foreign Education breaks down exactly what happens at the Visa Application Center (VAC) so you can walk in with confidence.
OFC stands for Offsite Facilitation Center. This appointment is purely administrative. Its purpose is to collect your biometric data—specifically, your fingerprints and a digital photograph—before you meet the Consular Officer for your actual interview.
Key Fact: You will not be interviewed during this appointment. The staff here are not visa officers; their job is simply to verify your identity and collect data.
The entire process is usually very fast, often taking less than 20 minutes once you are inside. Here is the flow:
You technically need very few documents for this appointment, but they are non-negotiable. If you forget one, you will be sent home.
The US Visa Application Centers have strict security protocols. Do not carry the following items:
Smile Tip: We recommend leaving your phone and bags in your car or with a relative waiting outside to avoid the hassle of finding a locker.
While the Biometrics appointment is casual compared to the actual interview, your photo taken here will be printed on your visa and used for identification for the next 10 years.
Recommendation: Wear "Smart Casual" clothing. Avoid white shirts (as the background is white) and avoid wearing glasses (they are not allowed in the photo).
At Smile Foreign Education, we guide you through every step—from filling the DS-160 to preparing you for the interview questions.
