I’ve Paid My Deposit for the USA. What Happens Next?

Destination: USA 🇺🇸

University Finalized.
What Happens Next?

You have accepted the offer and paid the required deposit/fees. Now, the real journey begins. The US process is documentation-heavy, but we have broken it down into 4 clear stages.

Stage 1: The "Golden Ticket" (Form I-20)

Since you have paid your fees/deposit, the university is now generating your Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility). You cannot apply for a visa without this.

⚠️ Critical Task: Verify Details

Once you receive the draft I-20 via email, check every single letter. Your Name, Date of Birth, and Citizenship must match your Passport exactly. A typo here can cause visa rejection.

Stage 2: The SEVIS Fee (Form I-901)

Before you go to the embassy, you must pay the "SEVIS Fee" to the US Department of Homeland Security. This is separate from your visa application fee.

  • What is it? It activates your student record in the US government database.
  • Cost: Approx $350 USD (Subject to change).
  • Action: Pay this online and save the PDF receipt. You must physically carry this receipt to your interview.

Stage 3: DS-160 & Slot Booking

This is the actual visa application phase.

1. The DS-160 Form

This is a long, detailed online form about your history. Honesty is key here. Any discrepancy between your answers here and your interview answers will lead to a refusal.

2. Booking the Interview

You will book two appointments:
Biometrics (OFC): Fingerprints and photo.
Consular Interview: The face-to-face interview with the Visa Officer.

Stage 4: The Interview (The Make or Break)

Unlike other countries that focus on documents, the US visa is a personality-based assessment. The officer will ask you questions to check your "Intent."

What do you need to prove?
  1. Academic Intent: Why this specific university? Why this course?
  2. Financial Stability: Who is sponsoring you? Do they have enough funds?
  3. Intent to Return: You must prove you plan to return to your home country after your studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • "Should I book my flight ticket now?" NO. Never book flights until your visa is stamped on your passport. US visa processing times can be unpredictable.
  • "Do I need a medical exam?" Usually, yes. Most universities require specific vaccinations (MMR, Meningitis, etc.) before you arrive on campus. Check your university's "Health Compliance" page.
