Letter of Recommendation (LOR) Guidelines for Study Abroad Applications
The Perfect LOR
A Letter of Recommendation is not just a formality—it is a critical endorsement of your potential. Here is how to ensure yours meets university standards.
Your LOR provides the admission committee with an outside perspective on your strengths, accomplishments, and suitability for the program. It must be professional, credible, and specific.
The 5 Essentials of a Valid LOR
🏢
Official Letterhead
Must be printed on the official letterhead of the referee's organization. This establishes credibility.
📅
Recent Date
The letter must be dated within the last 6 months. Old recommendations are often considered irrelevant.
📧
Must include the referee's official email, mobile number, and designation/position.
✒️
Correct Heading
Title it "Letter of Recommendation".
🚫 Never use "To Whom So Ever It May Concern".
📝
Specific Content
It must explicitly recommend you for higher studies and highlight your specific strengths and fit.
⚠️ Common Mistakes: What is NOT an LOR?
Do not submit these documents in place of a recommendation letter:
🚫 Bona Fide Certificate
🚫 MOI Certificate
🚫 Backlog Certificate
Does the University Email the Referee?
Yes, many universities now use digital verification. They may require 2-3 references and will email your referees directly with a secure link.
💡 Pro Tip: Inform your referees before you submit your application. Ask them to keep an eye on their inbox (and spam folder) for the verification email.
