CAS Shield Pre-CAS Questionnaire Master Guide
🎯 Objective
To ensure all student responses in the Pre-CAS stage are Accurate, Realistic, and Interview-Safe. This stage is a "Credibility Check"—poor answers here lead to CAS delays or visa rejections.
1. Accommodation Planning
The university wants to see that the student isn't just "showing up," but has planned their life in the UK.
✅ Recommended Strategy
Default: On-campus accommodation.
Why? It shows high planning, is considered the safest option by UKVI, and removes the need for complex address verification during Pre-CAS.
❌ Risky Answer to Avoid
"I have not yet decided."
Risk: Triggers "Lack of Seriousness" flags. If a student is staying with family/friends, ensure the name and relation are verifiable.
2. Financial Logic & Weekly Costs
Counselors must ensure students provide realistic figures. UK living costs are high; underestimating them suggests a "Non-Genuine" student.
| Expense Item | Safe Range (Per Week) | Counselor Sample Note |
|---|
| Rent/Accommodation | £120 – £180 | "Around £140-£160 depending on the room type." |
| Living Costs (Food/Bill) | £80 – £120 | "Approximately £100 for food, phone, and travel." |
| Travel Method | Walk / Bus / Train | Avoid: "Taxi daily" (Too expensive). |
3. UKVI Credibility (The "YES" Rule)
If a student says "No" to interview awareness, it is an immediate red flag for the university.
Correct Response: "Yes, I am fully aware that international students may be interviewed by UKVI to verify their intent and financial background."
⚠️ HIGH-RISK COUNSELOR MISTAKES
- Copying and pasting the same answer for every student (CAS Shield tracks this).
- Suggesting budgets lower than £80/week (Survival is impossible).
- Contradicting the Statement of Purpose (SOP) or bank balance certificates.
- Allowing the student to fill the form without a prior briefing session.
🚀 QUICK COUNSELOR CHECKLIST (Before Submission)
✅ Consistency: Do these answers match what we wrote in the Visa SOP?
✅ Realism: Can the student actually survive on the budget mentioned?
✅ Interview Prep: Does the student know WHY they chose this accommodation/budget?
