Study Permit Extension Approved!
Now What?

The "Implied Status" is over. Here is your urgent to-do list to keep your status valid.

Congratulations! Seeing that approval letter from IRCC is a huge relief. You can legally stay in Canada, continue your studies, and breathe easy.

However, getting the new permit is not the end of the process. Many students forget the secondary documents that expire alongside their old permit. At Smile Foreign Education, we want to ensure you don't face any interruptions in your work or travel.

1. The "10-Second Audit"

Before you celebrate, check your new physical document carefully. Errors happen!

Check: Spelling of your name, Date of Birth, and most importantly, the Expiry Date (did they give you the full length of your program?) and Work Conditions (does it say you are authorized to work on/off campus?).

2. Extend Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)

This is the most critical step if you are working part-time. Your SIN expiry date is linked to your Study Permit expiry date.

The Risk: If your old permit has expired, your SIN is technically expired. If you continue working without updating Service Canada, you could face issues with payroll or CRA.

  • How to fix: Upload your new Study Permit to the Service Canada website immediately.
  • Outcome: You will keep the same SIN number, but the expiry date in the system will be extended. Share the new confirmation with your employer's HR.

3. Apply for a New TRV (Visa Stamp)

This is the #1 confusion among students.
Your Study Permit (the big paper) lets you stay in Canada.
Your TRV (the sticker in your passport) lets you enter Canada.

When you extend your study permit inside Canada, they do NOT automatically give you a new visa sticker. If you plan to travel home for holidays, you must submit a separate application for a "Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)" to get a new foil in your passport.

4. Update Provincial Health Coverage

Whether you are on MSP (British Columbia), OHIP (Ontario), or private insurance, your coverage usually ends on the day your old visa expired.

Action: Send a copy of your new Study Permit to your provincial health authority immediately to reinstate your coverage. Do not risk being uninsured!

5. Update Your University/College

Visit the International Student Services or Registrar's office at your school. They need a copy of your new permit on file to confirm you are still a legal student. This ensures your enrollment remains active.
