F-1 Student Travel Guide
Going home for Winter or Summer break? Make sure you have the "Golden Three" documents to get back into the USA.
Visiting home in the middle of your degree is exciting, but for international students, crossing the US border is always a formal legal process. You are not just "coming back"; you are requesting re-entry to resume your F-1 status.
At Smile Foreign Education, we see students get stuck at immigration simply because they forgot a signature or a document. Follow this checklist to ensure your return is smooth.
Look at Page 2 of your I-20 form. There is a section called "Travel Endorsement."
Open your passport. Look at the F-1 Visa Sticker.
Is it valid on the date you plan to land back in the USA?
Do not pack these in your checked luggage! Keep them in your backpack/handbag to show the CBP officer at the US airport.
| Document | Why you need it |
|---|---|
| Valid Passport | Must be valid for at least 6 months into the future. |
| Valid F-1 Visa | Your entry ticket. (If in old passport, carry both). |
| Signed I-20 | With the valid travel signature on Page 2. |
| Enrollment Proof | Print your unofficial transcript or "Verification of Enrollment" from your student portal. Proves you are an active student. |
| Financial Proof | A recent bank statement or sponsor letter (just in case they ask). |
| SEVIS Fee Receipt | The I-901 receipt you paid when you first applied. |
When you land in the US (e.g., JFK, SFO, Chicago), you will face a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. Do not be nervous. Answer honestly and briefly.
