The 150-Day Rule: Surviving an Unscheduled Break
A complete manual for international students facing 4-6 month gaps.
150 Days Maximum Gap Allowed
NO WORK After Day 150
PGWP Risk Without Proper Status
Part 1: Defining Your "Break" Type
An Unscheduled Break is any gap outside the official academic calendar. Unlike Summer holidays, this period puts a "pause" on your student status, triggering the 150-day countdown.
Why students face these gaps:
- Switching DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
- Deferring intake due to personal reasons
- Waiting for the next available program start date
- Medical leave or family emergencies
Part 2: The Compliance Timeline
Phase 1: Day 1-90
Secure your new LOA. This is the "safe zone" for processing paperwork.
Phase 2: Day 91-149
The warning zone. Prepare your Visitor Record application if you aren't starting school yet.
The Red Line: Day 150
STOP WORK IMMEDIATELY. Working past this day without studying is a serious violation.
Can I work during the 6-month gap?
Only if the gap is less than 150 days and you have already received your LOA for the next program. Once you hit day 151, work is prohibited until your new classes begin.
Part 3: 3 Ways to Stay Legal
1. Apply for Visitor Record
Switch to "Tourist" status to remain in Canada legally while waiting for your semester.
2. Leave the Country
Go back home. Keep your boarding passes as proof that you did not stay or work illegally.
3. Bridging Courses
Enroll in a short-term certificate course to keep your status "Active."
