Walkthrough: What Really Happens on IELTS Test Day?

From the security check to the final "Stop Writing," here is your minute-by-minute guide to the exam center.

You have practiced your essays. You have mastered the listening tapes. But for many students, the biggest fear isn't the English—it's the unknown environment of the exam center.

At Smile Foreign Education, we believe that knowing the logistics removes 50% of the stress. Here is exactly what you will face on the big day.

Part 1: Arrival & Security (08:00 AM - 09:00 AM)

Most LRW (Listening, Reading, Writing) tests start in the morning.

🚫 The "No Personal Items" Rule

This surprises everyone. You cannot take anything into the exam hall except your ID and a transparent water bottle.

Must Leave Behind: Phone (switched off), Watch (smart or analog), Wallet, Keys, Handkerchiefs (sometimes), Food.
*There is a "Baggage Area" where you will deposit your bag. Do not bring valuables.

  • Identity Check: The staff will check your Original Passport (or the ID you registered with). If you forget this, you go home. No exceptions.
  • Biometrics: They will take a digital photo of you (this photo goes on your result card!) and scan your finger.
  • Seating: You are guided to a specific desk with a label showing your candidate number. On the desk, you will usually find headphones (for Listening) and stationery (if paper-based).

Part 2: The Test (Approx. 2 Hours 40 Mins)

Once seated, you cannot speak to other candidates. If you need help (e.g., headphones not working), raise your hand silently.

🎧 Listening (40 Mins)

Paper-Based: You get 30 mins for audio + 10 mins transfer time.
Computer-Based: You get 30 mins audio + 2 mins check time.
Tip: A "Sound Check" is done before starting. If the volume is low, tell them NOW.

📖 Reading (60 Mins)

No Transfer Time! Unlike listening, you must write your answers directly onto the answer sheet within the hour.
Warning: Invigilators will shout "10 minutes left" and "5 minutes left." Don't panic.

✍️ Writing (60 Mins)

You are given Task 1 and Task 2 together. You manage your own time.
Tip: We recommend doing Task 2 (Essay) first because it carries more marks.

The "Bathroom Rule" (Crucial)

Going to the toilet during IELTS is a strategic disaster because the clock does not stop.

  • You cannot leave during the Listening test.
  • You cannot leave during the last 10 minutes of any section.
  • If you go during Reading/Writing, you lose precious minutes. Advice: Go before you enter the hall!

What about Speaking?

The Speaking test is held on a different day (usually) or a different time slot. It is a 1-on-1 interview in a private room.

You will wait in a waiting room, be called by the examiner, and enter a small office. They will record the conversation on a digital recorder. It lasts only 11-14 minutes.

Still Feeling Nervous?

The best way to beat exam anxiety is practice. At Smile Foreign Education, we conduct Full Mock Tests that simulate the exact exam conditions—so when the real day comes, it feels like just another practice run.
